Ford PAS Program - South Texas
The Ford PAS Program is an academically rigorous, standards-based program that has been introduced to South Texas students, teachers, and community members since the fall of 2005. The Ford PAS program is currently being implemented in 19 South Texas high schools, making South Texas the largest Ford PAS program in the country. High school students are introduced to inquiry-and project-based teaching pillars linking classroom learning with the challenges students will face in post-secondary education and with the expectations of the workplace. These links are in the process of being forged through community-wide cooperative efforts and innovative partnerships that will join local middle schools and high schools, colleges, universities, business leaders, and community. Through these coordinated learning experiences, Ford PAS has been preparing students with elemental skills such as critical thinking, problem solving, teamwork and communication, as well as experiences to help them make decisions about their future education and careers.

UTPA and Ford PAS
UTPA’s mission with the Ford PAS program has been defined in reinforcing our network of feeding schools, nurturing the relationship with our current educational partners and reducing the high school drop-out rate in the South Texas Region. This program is based at The University of Texas–Pan American (UTPA) Division of Community Engagement and is working collaboratively with UTPA Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness towards Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP) and Region One Service Education Center GEAR UP.

HESTEC and Ford PAS
The Hispanic Engineering Science and Technology (HESTEC) week has been a key component to promote and introduce the Ford PAS program to a variety of educational leaders since fall of 2003. The HESTEC program is working with Ford PAS partners and the GEAR UP Program to measure the program content and its impact in the communities of South Texas.

Ford PAS schools in South Texas
Schools currently implementing Ford PAS in South Texas include: BETA Academy, Edcouch-Elsa High School, Edinburg High School, La Joya Senior High School, La Villa High School, Lyford High School, Lyndon Baines Johnson High School, McAllen High School, Mercedes High School, PSJA High School, PSJA Memorial High School, PSJA North High School, Rio Grande High School, Santa Maria High School, St. Augustine High School, Valley View High School, Veterans Memorial High School and Zapata High School.

Ford PAS - Engaging the South Texas Community
The continuous support and implementation of the Ford PAS Program in the South Texas Region is supporting UTPA with its community outreach efforts.  Collectively, we are working with a variety of school districts to increase the number of students striving for higher learning opportunities. University resources, as well as those of the schools, foundations, and the local community will help remove the barrier of poverty for many families of South Texas. We strongly believe this partnership has played an integral role in helping to create a model that can be replicated by other universities across the country.
